Back AE and Combustion both have 3D capabilities complete with cameras and lights and shadows, etc. although I think what they do is referred to as "postcards in space" (so for example I don't think you could have a particle effect travel from one postcard to another) rather than full-on 3D like we're used to with Carrara. There's also an invigorator plug-in that extends AE's 3D capabilities and as you mentioned you can export camera tracking data from C4D and import that into AE (it would be nice if someday this could be done from Carrara as well). You can also do things with a z-buffer like fog and depth-of-field.
The more I learn about 3D the more I realize how much other programs like AE often come into play on a project.
