Back I speak some Rhino (ver 2) and a little Amapi.
I use the WaveFront "obj" format for everything going out of Rhino into Carrara. The main reasons for this are quad support and UV Mapper compatibility. If you are using Carrara 3 with built in uv mapping tools then it is not as big a factor as it used to be. Mesh from nurbs tend to be large. If you let Rhino do the meshing at the default settings during export it will be very large using an object with a good amount of detail.
Your best approach is to convert each part (or logical group) of your Rhino scene to mesh individually and optimize the settings for each, then export just the mesh. Small changes in the settings can make a big difference in the vertex count without causing the model to look faceted.
I have some notes on the settings for mesh export (cut from different Rhino forums) that I can email to you if you would like them.
Depending on what you are making, the absolute cleanest - lowest vertex-count imported objects you can get would be from a polygonal modeler like Amapi or wings, imported with 4 sided (quad) facets in place. Why you would want it that way would be for organic animation & better smoothing of the low-res object using Carrara's SDS options.
