I heard the same thing and it dose make sense.  The high end people use the
products previously mention but a lot of new users to 3D both hobbies and
professionals start off with an entry level program like RDS/Carrara.  So if
you look at the whole 3D user base you could very easily see that  that most
new users start with a Carrara type program.  The key will be for Carrara to
keep these users from migrating to the big name programs.  I see Carrara
making head way in this area but they are still a couple of versions away.

 Whats interesting is that I read somewhere that Ray Dream accounted
 for 50% of all 3d users at one time. I don't know where I saw that
 and too tell you the truth, I find it hard to believe. But suppose if
 it is true, I would have to ask myself where did the old users go?

 By the way, I did see Carrara mentioned in depth in a generic "Web
 Animation" book at Barnes & Nobles the other day. So maybe the
 Carrara word is spreading...
