I think that equals to GOOD particle system, complemented with true transparency mapping. Which means that if you object is transparent, it is. No matter if ray has bounced 8 times already or not. And who is Ray anyway? And why is he always bounced? ;-)

Discreet has done this with couple of plugins as well. They buy the the stuff and make it integrate totally into main product. Spline modeling (bezier patches in 3dsmax, don't confuse with lofting in carrara. Similar to AM modeling tools) are a one example. In one version it was available as plugin and in next version it was integrated and improved.
