I'm guessing here, but I'd bet that a major portion of the Carrara user-base came from Raydream, and most of us probably enjoy the fact that, beneath the glossy new interface and superior rendering and stability, one still finds most of Raydream features intact. Any old tutorials for Raydream's spline modeller can still be useful in Carrara (see the aforementioned duplicate manual pages), and I've managed to import all my old custom shaders into Carrara, intact. Same for Raydream's vertex modeller. New features have taken both farther along the same road, not a different or new path.
I don't find the reference to Raydream in inconvenience; I loved Raydream and I like Carrara a lot more. But the reason that Carrara isn't viewed as something detatched and independent from Raydream is that, well, it isn't.
