Back Well, I'm very impressed with the new renderers, HDRI and photon mapping for radiosity. Carrara renders can look good. Really good. The interface is still the only 3D I ever learned successfully. I guess that has a lot to do with Raydream, but C definitely stays friendly to me. The price stays friendly, too. I use many programs in my graphic/video work and 3D is only one of them. I couldn't afford anything higher priced. Anyone remember Inspire3D, the crippled lil'bro of Lightwave? Overpriced AND limited render-size. Buh-bye. Carrara feels like it is a good value. I've paid to upgrade twice now, and that says a lot for a low- budget small indie like me.
I wish C was more stable. I got a lot of crashes last night (os9, C3.1) from what seemed like a pretty simple scene, but it involved a mesh model converted from a deformed spline model. Seems C really hates certain models even if it made them itself. I get no crashes for a long time, but then one object will make the whole thing unstable for some reason.... I have to admit, tho, I never got another app up to the complexity of my Carrara scenes so I don't know if other apps are more, less, or equally stable.
I think the sky effect is becoming dated. I actually bought it as a plug-in for Photoshop (4 Seasons) some 1000 years ago, so I obviously thought it was amazing at one time. Would be nice to have a better sky now that you can use it to define Global Illumination.... Particles could use an upgrade too, IMO. I want to add models as particles, but I guess AnythingGrows sorta covers that.... I hope the new book that is supposedly coming out covers the DGC plug-ins because I bought several but haven't really got the hang of them because I need a few 3rd-party tutorials before new concepts sink in to my slow brain.
I don't honestly think C will ever "catch up" to the reputation of Lightwave (et al), but these older apps are starting to lose their mystique anyway. I can't imagine paying thousands for a renderer when I can get pretty darn close for a few hundred with a better (easier) interface. Maya is made for a whole crew of designers to work on and that's really great, but I need an app that I can handle alone. I'd love to be able to import LWO format all the same.... That's the only thing I find missing, since on the Mac-side there are almost no options for 3D conversion.
Anyway, what are your opinions?
