Right. That just further makes my point. 3DS is considerd "serious" enough to
be taught at the university level. Carrara (so far) is not because design
studios and FX houses don't ask for it by name. They don't use it. The fact
that 3DS and the others have been the standards in 3D apps for the last 10
years or so helped give them that advantage. Carrara still has to put in some
time to make it's name.

In 1993 LightWave was the first app being being used for effects in weekly
sci fi TV shows like Babylon 5 and SeaQuest DSV (and in 95 to even better
results in Space: Above and Beyond). In 1993 LightWave wasn't even a stand
alone app, it was still a module of NewTek's VideoToaster. Hard to belive but
if you bought the Toaster, LightWave just came as part of it whether you
wanted it or not.

Around the same time (1994 to be exact) Infini-D (then at version 3 and a
Mac only app) was also being used (with fairly good results) by Hollywood FX
houses for effects work in big budget sci fi television shows like NBC's "Earth
2".

LightWave however never went away and thus continued on to become a
standard, not just for TV effects but for 3D in general.

Infini-D by contrast died in 1997 at version 4.5 (then available for both Mac
and Win) because of some bad decisions (my opinion of course). I still wonder
what Infini-D would have been like now if it had stuck around to see a version
8 like LightWave had. Thing is, Carrara at version 3 is light years better than
Infini-D 4.5 was so I think it's got a chance. If Eovia maintains the current
level of features and quality and enhances animation capabilities in future
releases Carrara has a real shot at hitting the big time. (especailly if they
do
it while mantaing a similar price structure) They just have to stick around
and get the word out. Hopefully we can all help that potential success by
producing outstanding work and being sure to stamp it with the Carrara
name.
