Re: we should not need to buy another program to import poser figu 2003-12-12 - By debadger
Back Modeling humans is HARD! No question about it, it's probably the hardest model of all to make well, which is why people do want to buy them. This has been brought up on the other animation list I'm on too. So I do understand Poser's appeal, its people and animals are appealing for those who want to get to the good bits - posing, animating and making a picture. And really, there's nothing wrong with that because the 'big guys' do that too. Everyone specializes - there are people who ONLY model, ONLY rig, ONLY animate (and I'll bet there are people who are better known for quadrupeds, or fantasy characters or bipeds) ONLY light (they're really important too)... there are people whose sole job is generating textures. Only us hobbyists want to do it all and it's reasonable that we want to take shortcuts - I'm not knocking that.
But... You knew there would be a 'but', didn't you. A high percentage of the Poser figures I've seen in the forums are nude, or semi nude soft porn using characters who are modeled on the women seen in nudie magazines. Why this is so, dunno. And it's just an observation not a blanket condemnation. The most original, in appearance and posing, characters I've ever seen from that software are the dragon series on Renderosity. They are funny, they are clever, they are stills, which is fine. I suspect part of the reason people bag on the Poser characters is that they ARE instantly recognizable too, and the way they're rigged makes it very difficult to change their stiff, awkward appearance.

Hi Naomi,
I couldn't help to notice, that you want the models, not the animation. This seems mostly be the source for this poser issue. People want high-detail models of heroic humans or fantasy creatures. The characters are created in programs outside of poser. I know people create them in 3dsmax, lightwave and amapi.
Often people have bought the models from daz or similar place and payed some money for them. I know that similar quality models are also avalable on other formats as well. Maybe people should look into getting models in .obj format if they import better? OR why not demand curious labs for carrara plugin?
Or how about creating your models from scratch? For me, that is the fun part!!! It's better to start with simple, low-poly characters. Here's a tutorial that is in large part applicable to carrara studio as well http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/benmathis/benmathis_1.asp
And here you can find a lot more!!! http://www.character-animation.de/tutorials/
>From that place, you can find tutorials for creating hihg-poly models, polygon hair, texturing, animation etc. Really worth visiting.
