There are lots of mesh *objects* in .max format to find on internet, at Renderosity for example. I got the impression that the .max format contains more information than most other 3d files. But also I think it is kind of forbidden outside of 3dsmax, as for example PolyTrans has a plugin to run from inside 3dsmax to access the outer world. All other formats PolyTrans handles standalone.
