Carrara 2 question about glass

Carrara 2 question about glass

Right now it looks like plexiglass - and a very convincing render of it at
that.  I'd make the highlight smaller and harder, that's the main difference
between glass and plastic.  You need something for the glass to reflect too,
like chrome, glass without a good environment will look terrible.  Anything
highly reflective is very hard to show well - there are photographers who
specialize in beauty shots of the stuff - glassware, tools, you name it.
Poor lighting and camera positioning can make a 24K gold ring look like a
dirty brass washer.

Figure out what's causing that extreme light flare in the gold ring and back
it off - it's drawing the eye away from the glass object.  You may need
several lights, to pick up highlights specifically on the word and show up
areas of the thing.  I usually make my lights outrageous colors while I'm
setting up a scene - that way I can tell exactly what each light is doing,
which highlights and shadows it's forming (or not doing anything useful at
all) Then I back the color off to faint tints, warm in the foreground and
cooler colors further back.  Some of the lights are tiny, and only at 10%,
just enough to cause one thing to spark a little or bring up an edge of an
object.  This gives far more interest to the scene and gives it a lot more
depth which the viewer is not really aware of, just that it looks more
interesting than a flat, white light.

Look up the Gary Beale tutorials, someone is sure to have a link to his
page - he did a wonderful tutorial on a '55 Chevy in RayDream that is still
worth taking a good hard look at. He's a product photographer and gives some
excellent tips on how to light and texture for a really sexy beautiful
product.
