Back Max files don't move well between apps, they are (as I understand it) not complete files with geometry and lighting contained in them, but rather specify that 'this object goes here, this goes there' without storing the object details. This means that a .max file pretty much doesn't convert or load into anything else, and not into tS, nor into the converter that I use. The route is to save it from Max in a different format, then import. Someone with more detailed knowledge might be able to add more than this :)
