New 3D format in the works... 2004-04-21 - By Andrew Paules
Back Notice that the list of companies pushing the format doesnt include any of the heavy hitters in the 3D industry - Alias|Wavefront, SideFX, Newtek, Discreet, and Avid.
I don't think it'll ever happen. A straight-ahead package like Maya is never going to be able to use the same scene format as a procedural package such as Houdini - Sure you can have a common format for final objects, but those already exist - DXF and OBJ are pretty universal, as well as IGES. The problem is storing the consturction history and all of the propriatary data for each package - one format that could encompass everything would be incredibly bloated.
