Not sure I understand your first question right so I'm going to skip it for now and answer the computer keyboard key question, I would model the key in the spline room and make the dip in the top using a boolean subtraction with a cylinder or sphere, depending what kind of key you want. I think that would be the easiest way, then you could always bevel the top edges in the vertex room later. BTW do you have Carrara 3.01? If not the boolean may be alot more of a pain, might have to clean up a few stray vertices. Good luck!
