Back well, to get away from the plast~icky look, you should use a hair generator[?]...check anything grows and see if they have examples that suit your need. reducing the reflection and other channels of the skin texture that produce shine should give you a better looking skin, but unless you can come up with a subsurface scattering effect, then you might have to fudge it a bit,in a photo editing programme, perhaps? have you checked some of the community forums?
maybe someone on the list has some in-depths tips...
