Precalulating Lighting in 3.0.1? 2003-12-08 - By Charles Brissart
Back Hi,
the extra step is used to correct a number of issues with Global Illumination. In particular, it avoid certain interpolation artifacts that were happening with sky light on infinite plane.
It also improves that image quality in most cases.

When using any of the GI options, (caustics, sky dome, etc...) when you press render first it goes through the "Sample Lighting" and we see a progress bar run at the top of our screen. Since updating to 3.0.1 I've noticed that it now goes through the "Sample Lighting" and once that reaches 100% it starts a second progress bar right under it that says it's "Precalculating Lighting".
My question is, what exactly is it doing? What is "Precalculating Lighting"? I know I've not changed the way I do anything so unless I've not been paying attention, I'm assuming it's something new in 3.0.1 since I've never seen it before.
There's no problem or issue with it I was just wondering what the extra step was for. I figure it'll have to be one of the Eovia guys who answers this one. Matt, Charles?
