  | | | A Better Boolean Bonanza | A Better Boolean Bonanza 2003-12-07 - By Dean Carter
Back I've always been disappointed with Carrara's boolean operations.
When I downloaded the 3.0.1 update I noticed in the Read Me file that various boolean issues had been addressed. So I thought I give it another try.
To my surprise boolean operations seem to be working *much* better than before. One test after another produced objects with no noticeable artifacts. Only on one model (a large cube with 11 sequential boolean operations) did I encounter any stray vertices or open polygons (which were repairable). Even subtracting a curved text object from an ellipsoid was successful (though it took a loooong time to calculate).
I've posted an example of my results here: http://kryptonite.ece.ucsb.edu/pictures/3D-Modeling/BetterBooleans.jpg
A combination of primitive, spline, and vertex objects were used. I'm running on a Mac G5 with OS X 10.3.1.
These tests would have failed miserably with previous versions of Carrara.
I be interested to hear if others are finding a similar improvement.
