Q. re: copyrighting work before uploading to website 2004-04-14 - By Baker, Ed
Back I'm not sure, but from my understanding, publishing it on your website gives you a bit of a copyright. It's just not registered. The of course there's the fact of having the source material which would back you up.
Here's a list of links provided by the US Government:

And though I didn't look too deeply into this, this appears to have some good info:

Anyone else out there wanna chip in?

Hi, All,
I hope that those who celebrate Easter or Passover had fulfilling ones.
Meanwhile, I am just wondering whether anyone copyrights (as in, officially - registering with the US CopyRight office) their works before uploading them to a website.
Eventually I'll get my site ready to upload and what I was thinking is that, since everything (design, music, images, wtitings, etc., and so forth) is byme, myself, and I, with the exception (noted) of maybe a logo or two and some JavaScript snippets, it might behoove me to load the entire thing onto an extra CD and send the whole kit'n'kaboodle for registration as "collected Works Volume One" or some such thgingr. Not that this prevents people ripping off your stuff, but merely to have a leg to stand on "just in case".
Anyway, I was just curious whether anyone else is doing anything similar, or am I just particularly cynical...
Unfortunately, nothing new loaded yet, working slowly on a couple things but this racka-fracka eye is holding me back from doing much of anything at all (gotta have some immune testing done =:-p ). Hopefully soem new stuff can go up soon! But I *am* curious about thuis registered copyright thing. I know that "technically" something is "automatically" copyrighted if it's original, but if push comes to shove, one doesn't get too far withour some sort fo proof. Not fo course that my stuff is so fabulous, but, on the off chance that a few bucks can be made, only fair if I make 'em <g>!
TIA,
- Kris K.
