Well, it's not easy.  :-)

But if you first select by name then, while the part
is still selected, you can go to name it again and
just erase out the name. There will still be a "block"
in the list when you go to select by name, but you
can't reselect that item anymore.

But you can rename items and that erases the
previous name. You can have a group of polygons,
for example, named and then select a portion of
that group and name it something else. The first
name you gave it will be erased for that portion
that you've renamed.
