As others have mentioned, Maya PLE is also available as free
download from www.alias.com. While there, check out the excellent
SketchBook Pro!!! You'll need tablet pc or wacom tablet. Really
great and intuitive program.

Other big guys also offer free learning versions.
XSI learning edition from www.softimage.com
and
Houdini apprentice edition from http://www.sidefx.com/
