The bevel tool is your new best pal in the Spline modeler

http://ice.prohosting.com/~docgac/wm/w_1.htm

(all spline objects beveled with the bevel tool)

Bevel quick start:
1.In the spline modeler add a circle to the drawing plane.
2. Under "Sections" hit "Center"
3. Sections again: tap "Create"
4. The new cross section will be selected in the main view,
select "Bevel>Front Face" in the properties tray.
5. Change the other settings and see what happens.

Bevel is very dependent on the size of the object being beveled,
if you see twisted or missing faces reduce the bevel height/depth
to ".01".
Then increase the value until it looks good or goes bad again.
You can also scale your object up before attempting to bevel again.

Once you move on to compound shapes (ones with holes in the center)
keeping an eye on the size ratios is critical.
