The beveling tool in the spline modeler has tremendous power, beyond conventional beveling. It automates curvatures along a profile on either side of a cross section. That means you can now bevel the profile to match the cross section in order to make a cube beveled on all edges, or spline text beveled fore and aft.
But that use just scratches the surface. You can also make modifiable corregations along a pipeline extrusion, something that would be very hard in the vertex modeler. The bevel options give you enough variation to create some quite interesting shapes.
Just remember that the bevel tool creates curvature in a profile on either side of a cross section, and you'll get the hang of it.
