Re: Distributed Rendering 2003-12-01 - By pmiinalainen

Yes, entirely true! I said, that it would require eovia to do it ( add the distributed frame-level rendering). Carrara can't do it. That's all i said. It doesn't matter if bryce can do it. There are loads of programs that do that, carrara just isn't one of them :-( That is, at the moment...
Furthermore, distributed frame level rendering would also mean that global illumination calculation etc. would have to be processed four times (this information came from eovia), so while frame-splitting would be technically quite easy to add into carrara, it might not be very economical rendertimes wise... Maybe in the future we will see an option to save and share lighting solutions. Lightscape renderer had that... (now discreet* gi renderer after they bought it, i think?).
Lightwave, max, maya, xsi renderers can take arguments like left=300 top=200 width, height to enable frame level distibuted rendering. . In carrara you can't. Simple as that... :-)
You could do distributed rendering with several external renderers though. Just buy mental ray or renderman server :-) And hire a programmer to do exporter/importer for carrara format. Just kidding... But actually, there are some highly efficient renderers available that support network rendering. The only thing that stops using them, is that carrara doesn't export animation information. If we get a plugin that fully support filmbox format, that would open possibilities to a whole new level...

PS. If bryce can do that, have someone tested exporting huge carrara scenes and trying to render them in bryce with distributed rendering? Was rendering quality and total speed comparable?
