Crease/smooth??

Crease/smooth??

Sure; you Crease anything that should be sharp edged - knife, gears,
furniture edges and you Smooth things that should be more organic shaped - a
car's fenders (but the edges of the fenders probably should be Creased or it
will look odd.) On a human you'd Crease the edges of the eyelids, fingernail
edges, edges of teeth but not the faces, the very edges of the ears.  You
also Smooth things like walls (sometimes Flatten is in order too)

Say you want to do a book, open.  Ok, the inside edge of the spine where the
pages converge into the binding, the shape of the pages around their edges
and probably the two edges of the thin rectangles forming the two covers of
the book (a hardback) would be Creased.  The facets forming the pages
themselves would be Smooth; even though they do form a curved shape (humped
up from the spine then curving down as the pages lie flat)

If you have imported a 3DS file into Carrara you will find some facets are
Creased and Smoothed where they shouldn't be.  It will be very obvious in
shaded mode and you'll need to go into the Vertex Modeler and mend that.
It's usually pretty easy, if tedious.  When you're done you'll probably not
see much difference, which is disappointing.  If that is the case, Save,
exit, restart Carrara (try just closing and reopening the file too) and that
should show you a good regeneration.

Working in the Vertex Modeler can be very frustrating and confusing at times
when you're getting used to it.  I'd suggest you Duplicate an object you
want to work on.  Give the duplicate a new name, Hide the original, both
with its Properties and in the Edit pulldown (Hide/Show Object) then open
the duplicate in the Vertex Modeler.  It will ask if you want to make a new
master.... YES! you do, otherwise duplicating it is pointless.  Make sure
you're happy with this duplicate, save early and often, and when you're done
remember to Delete the original or you'll bog down your file. It doesn't
hurt to make multiple copies of your working file too - I've done all of
this after killing a few files and it's saved me a world of grief.

...Can anyone give me an example on when you would use the
crease/smooth option in the vertex modler? THanks!
