Since he didn't say anything about using a hard drive for Virtual RAM, my guess is that he meant 300000 k, not MB. When you assign memory in the "Get Info" window the unit used is k, not MB. 300000 k is 300 MB which is perfectly acceptable to assign to Carrara.
Of course if he is trying to assign 292 GB to Carrara when his machine only has 1 GB total well then yes, that would be ridiculous.
