Shadow transperancy problems 2004-04-09 - By Simon Windmill
Back Like Tom says, you have to use raytracing to get correct shadows out of a transparency-mapped object in most rendering systems, and the usual alternative for soft shadows is to use an array of lights or an area light.
I did a quick test in VirtuaLight, using a tS goniometric light which virtuaout converts to a spherical area light:

You can set how many samples to use for the shadowing - more = better = longer render times, as always. This one used 16 samples and took about 47 seconds.
Just for comparison, the tS version:

I couldn't actually get tS to render with its own area light in tS5.1 - does it have to be done in a radiosity calculation?
PS - John, I know you were having trouble with transparency maps and virtuaout, did you get it sorted?
Simon.
