Back a couple simple things to try is to flip the HDRI file in the scene properties. it the HDRI file has a top and bottom and say the bottom is dark. and the dark portion is flipped to the top then the lighting will be dark.
check to make sure that it is an HDRI file that carrara can use. before trying to light a scene, try testing the file with the preverbial chrome sphere in the scene to see the HDRI file.
