Back I am with you on this one Tony.
I like having push content via email. I find web based message boards slow and tedious even with broadband (mostly due to server side issues as they send me a new ad banner and other unwanted content). I use a non-standard but very capable email client PM-Mail2000 (www.pmmail200.com) that allows me to filter all my mail into separate folders for each mailing list so my inbox never gets cluttered. I have all my email come as plain text so I don't automatically download malware (viruses, activeX controls, spyware, VBscript) from embedded HTML commands in HTML mail. Most of the latest security patches for Windows these days have been to plug holes in reading HTML pages that allow a web site privileged access to your computer. My email allows me to select a popup list of all the URLs in a message and with one click launch the link in a separate browser so I can choose which link to follow very easily. I download and read my email on my PDA because I don't always have web access.
Advantages of email for mailing lists: - faster: text only means no superfluous graphics and ad banners, I can flip through more messages in the same time using my email preview window than I can using a web browser on broadband and with a busy group like this one that is a big time saver. I like to look at every post because often the subject line does not reflect the content. - archive your favourite messages for easy ready access: I slip all the best messages into a searchable archive folder which beats trying to find them in a web forum without a search tool. - no HTML Malware - push content: I don't have to remember to go get it, I comes to me. This is good for topics I like. - email filtering: I have a separate folder for each mailing list and spam filters and even kill filters are available to me: If I don't want to ever see another message from someone, I never have to. - take email with you when you are not connected
Disadvantages of Web based forums - slow access (Yahoo is really a pain due to the extra advertising) due to unnecessary content from the server - same old list hijackers "am i Hot?" but no way to filter them from the view - HTML formatted messages may contain invisible code (white text on white background) that can be used to compromise your system. - needs constant internet access and a web browser - difficult to archive good posts: select page, cut and paste into a text document, save text document somewhere or save as html and get all the graphics in a separate folder too... - receiving an email telling me there is a reply to my post but not telling me what the reply was
Overall, traditional mailing lists work well for me and I don't want this list to change to a web based forum only. Could the group be moved from Yahoo? Sure. Just don't ask me to participate via a web forum only, I can't do it.
