Back Mick, After you have imported your 3ds object, you can double click the object . You will see a "no parameters" window. With that window open choose "Edit" and select "Convert to Other Modeler" select "Vertex Model" from list and from there you enter the vertex modeling room. Apply shading domains to the areas you want to texture/shade.
You can pick the rest up from the manual or helpfiles or follow Cecillia's tutorial on 3dXtract.com for some guidance as well.
