New install of xpSp2 has the 'windows firewall' on by default.

Thanks Kim.  Firewall seemed the most likely culprit.  Suppose if that
doesn't work, I can try installing a Windows NT 2000 partition to run it on.

 Never saw troubles in the past with NT.  Not very happy with XP these
days.
