I use it all the time, no problem.

There must be something up with your setup.  Check you
render machines, can you find your way to the PTP
file's location using the same path you cache them to
in XSI?

There's no need to make them read only.  Just make
sure you cache them from start to finish uninterrupted
before you set off your render.
