Back >From what I understood most mobo's will only need an BIOS update to recognize the dualcore CPU's, the socket is the same.
Most important question in this entire upgrading madness is the mentalray licensing, will a dualcore be "seen" as one CPU or will eveybody need two extra licenses to get rendering on the two extra CPU's that are on the dye.....

OK, dumb question again - will the dual-core processors fit onto a standard motherboard? So if I got e.g a dual processor motherboard with 2x single core processors, I could upgrade the procs to dual core at a later date?
(PS are opterons the better choice for XSI?)

Hm weird because the opterons were released Q2-05 , while the Amd64 X2 only Q3-05.
I have a retailer here that just has them in (the opterons), not UK though...
I wonder what would be the way to go, single opteron dual core now, and add a second one later, or dual opteron single core now, and replace the whole bunch later. the dual core cpu costs about the triple of a single core with same clock speed...
I'm mostly interested in rendering performance.
