Compose your own music 2004-03-30 - By Alain Bellon
Back Acid is a good option. You will have to play with it a bit, especially if you have no musical experience (no music theory needed but it helps). You can load a video into the timeline and compose to the timing of the video file. Acid is a loop based program (a loop is a sound file that is timed properly so it can be played in a loop to a given beat), and it only has a very limited sequencer (a piano roll where you input notes). You may want to look into a free loop system like Making waves, or a similar commercial program called Sonar (previously CakeWalk).
Movie Maestro and SonicFire pro are great for quick development but they are expensive and your music will not be as "unique". But it is by far the easiest option for doing musical scores for video. Expensive.
I think for flexibility a loop based system is the best (especially the ones that let you load video on the timeline). You may want to buy a loop library too. There are cinematic loops available at the sony page. Oh and get the free version of Acid (a limited Acid3) to get a feel of how it works.
All in all, I am sure you will have some fun with this.
