Setting Custom Environment Variables

Setting Custom Environment Variables

At least that's what I think I want. I'm looking for a way to set a
variable that stores part of a system path. I frequently transfer data
between computers, and various assets (such as my custom noIcon.pic)
are saved in different locations and can't be resolved on one computer
or the other.
I'd like to create a variable that can be part of the pathname. So
assign $NOICON to c:\foo and then set the path inside XSI to
$NOICON\rsrc\noIcon.pic. Obviously $NOICON would point to a different
directory on other computers.

Is this possible? I could imagine writing a script that resolves
pathnames of a scene when it is opened, but is there an easier way? I
dug through the "data management" section of the reference docs, but
nothing there seems to provide me what I need. My computers are not
part of the same network, so AFAIK workgroups don't...well, work.
