I find this thread very interesting.

It's not everyday that you can hear how others are handling certain
components of their pipeline.
It's also interesting to hear everyones thoughts on what a pipeline is.

I think we can all agree that it's something unique for every studio,
and production -- based on budget, size of staff, hardware/software, and
needs.

One thing that I want to hear more of specifically is Data Management.

How is it being handled by other studios?

Naming Conventions.  - A Must
File Structure - A Must
Data Management of these is where opinion will vary.

If XSI isn't using an ASCII paradigm then what, by design does XSI do
well?  If Omation is using XML...   Does that mean a custom front-end to
manage the huge amount of data, where the data's at in the pipeline, and
who's got the current data currently?  ( if that makes any sense)

I'm glad to hear about Alienbrain.  Specifically, that's it's not the
end-all to data management that I've previously heard.
I'd love to hear practical ways to track and manage production data with
XSI specifally.
At this level, is it better to build your own dynamic database system
from scratch... or are there off-the-shelf components that can be
purchased to build a functional yet reliable data management system?

Thanks
