A new pic and a challenge? 2004-03-24 - By Baker, Ed
Back All good points Kris.
My idea is for an exchange of techniques, not neccesarily the production of finished pieces. Plenty of times while I'm working on a job or project, I'll come across a problem then remember some tutorial or project, and the perfect work around and/or solution is right there.
My personal goal of a weekly project is to try and improve my workflow through familiarity with the tools not to mention improve my work. Like you said, you learn by doing. I guess my use of the word "finish" was a bit misleading. I do plan to have a render, but it might not be necessarily perfect. I have work on pieces that I will continue.
That's why I have suggested the idea of a weekly or monthly project that everyone could participate in. I think it would help people that may have problems solve them or give others whole new approaches. Since it would be the same project, scene or model, it might make it easier for people to exchange tips, tricks and solutions since they would be in the same context.

<snip> Neither is "right" or "wrong" - just a matter of different people approaching things (?incl life?) in differnet ways. The good thing about setting up "weekly challenges" for yourself is mainly to practice certain things so that you learn to do them by habit. It's a lot like an artist practicing making "squiggly lines" with different paintbrushes or, for that matter, like a musician practising arpeggios and chords and so on. IOW, the components become second nature, and then, when you want to paint a full picture or play a complex peice of music, yo can do it more spontaneously, from the heart so to speak, rather than having to peck around and figure out all the details along the way. IOW, the point of a weekly project is not (IMO at least) merely to "finish something". It's to practice as above, sothat you can get to where you can finish somehting you want to keep.
