Maya to FBX to XSI with skeleton/weights 2005-06-08 - By Andy Jones
Back My experience has been that each software company only does a good job bringing assets from other programs into their own programs. Maybe they think they'll be able to trap people into using their program. (Whereas in practice, people usually just opt not to use it at all). The moral is, I typically use DotXSI to get things into XSI and FBX to get things into Maya. Neither is perfect, though, and I've definitely had instances where I couldn't get rigs into XSI intact using DotXSI. This sort of thing seems to always require some trial and error, like what you're doing. Good luck.
