Back Most of the time these days I start with something I know is right for the quality - usually 1,2, threshold 0.1 - and just let it go unless the frame time starts to go through the roof. At that point there's a number of things you head straight for, more often than not BSP. The rest of it is just being sensible about what you aim for and what settings on the things in the scene that are potential killers. Which prompts me to say, remember, it's not just render settings that make for expensive frames.
I don't think you need to wade through the full set of pages every time; once or twice to get the basics is probably enough but I do think you should get at least a loose understanding of how rendering works at this level. It's not really that hard.
