First of all, as a non-artist pipeline/engine techie, let me just say
the progress made in the API and dev department (which is at the core of
this discussion) over the last releases and updates (3.01 to 4.2) is
tremendous. Especially the addition of Python as a scripting tool and
the CDH API are HUGE steps forward in XSI's usefulness in a custom
pipeline and judging from the responses to community feedback things
will only get better.

>From an integration prespective I've got a lot to wish for and XSI isn't
the ideal tool yet, but neither is Maya or even Houdini (although
currently pipelining wise Houdini's my personal favourite, no matter
what ILM uses ;-).
Let's not forget that Softimage took the extremely risky and bold
decision to take an industry defining and thouroughly tried-and-tested
tool as SI|3D was and replace it with something completely new called
XSI, built up largely from scratch from revolutionary ideas and a lot of
guts and developing genius.
I don't suck up to anyone or any company since my job is to link any
application to any platfrom or engine, but my job and background also
give me a pretty good insight on the complexity and effort that's put
into building high-end 3D apps. The rate at which XSI developed from 1.x
to 4.x in terms of features and accessibility is unique to say the
least.
>From a tech point of view, comparing Maya with XSI is like comparing a
middle-aged veteran that's seen everything and refuses to innovate with
an adolescent that's catching up EXTREMELY quickly and willing to take
risks.
Instead of copycat press releases of who's not using XSI anymore, I'd
far rather see people from ILM (or any other large company) posting what
they require and lack, whether or not they actually do dump XSI or not.
We've obviously got a strong community going and there's plenty of proof
Softimage takes our opininions to heart, so help 'm build instead of
giving them slack.

Cheers,

Erik
