I'll chime in on that note just for fun.

Remember, I ran away from Maya specifically because SI's priorities in
the macro are in the right place even if their micro priorities are not
always exactly what I want.

Sure, Alias does a really good job of catering to huge production houses
like Weta.  And they may have scored some with ILM. But thats the
problem I've had with them.  Always about allowing the big houses to
incorporate their tech... almost never about the rest of us getting a
good solid base toolset that rivals the top houses.  Maya from my
perspective, has always been (since about version 3ish) about a two tier
system.  And I got sick of being on the bottom tier with no hope of
using it the way its mean to be used until I luck into getting involved
with a huge shop that has hacked Maya to its full potential with Alias'
help.

Soft is always looking to improve their base toolset.  And thats what I
like about them.  Maya may be right for ILM right now.  Its not right
for me right now.  And I don't think its necessarily right for the
majority of the industry either right now.  ILM exists in a very
different environment than most everyone else in the industry.  Just
like Pixar exists in a different environment.  Just because Pixar and
Blue sky have decided that they need to develop and maintain their own
rendering software does not mean we all should be doing the same.  Their
situation is different.  Likewise, if they choose Maya, it doesn't mean
we should be doing it either for the same reason.

Just my two cents.

p.s.  yea... if someone pays me well to use Maya, I will.  Like Bernard
said :)  Otherwise, its about what tool lets me get the job done
better.  And knowing both packages quite well, thats XSI for the time
being in my situation with the resources available to me.
