Maya main animation pipline in ILM ? for 3d characters ? hmm 2005-05-30 - By Andre DeAngelis
Back I agree entirely with Guy, wrong choices and misplaced priorities. This goes right back to the v1.0 days too.
As for the ILM Maya pipeline press release, it in itself could be very misleading. I have read quotes from ILM employees that have said Maya out of the box is next to useless to ILM. What they use and like is the API, which goes back to the issues that Guy raised.
There is also rumors that ILK are crating/using their own animation software "Zeno" and mainly using Maya for simulation. Who knows where the trial truth lies?

.. certainly one of the major issues is more the lack of openess of the software ( not the architecture ), than the support.
While a lot of efforts have been done recently - especialy at the SDK and the UI level - imho wrong choices have been made regarding priorities, wich is sad, because there are great teams of brillants developers at Softimage.
We still dont have access to many core features, we can't add custom 'Objects' to the scene graph, we dont even have access to the SceneGraph
itself yet, despite years of requests, and there are a lot of other customization issues.
This might seem insignificants to regular users/arstists, but in such big and technicaly advanced companies, customization is the key, and devs/tds are in the front line every days. When you hit walls again and again, it's time to reconsidere your choices.
There is the CDH. You can do nearly everything with it. For sure. But what about integration ? Yet you have to redo a good part of the software everytime. This has clearly been designed with the game market in mind. It's really great for this. But not for 'integrating' features.
Look at the Syflex 'integration'. Unable to communicate with the native simulation environment(s). Some aborted attempts have been made by third
parties to port their plugin to XSI.
Is it not the time to put an hold on fancy features, and seriously work on what is really needed ?
Softimage|XSI is a wonderfull Masterpiece of Software Engineering, loved
by everyone, but jealously kept closed by its Creators, and soon proudly
exposed in the Museum of Computer Graphics Archeology, if nothing is done.
