If you have custom commands/properties installed try doing a command line
render and see if they return any errors.

If I open an empty XSI 4.2, push 8 to open an explorer, hit C to view
"Commands" in the explorer, close XSI, restart XSI and hit 8 again, I
get an instant crash every time. It also crashes if I try to set a
 viewport to the explorer.

To get back to normal I have to push Alt-8 (See http://Alt-8.ora-code.com) to open an object viewer,
then I can open a regular explorer and set it back to  "Scene root",
close XSI, restart and it works like normal.

I can repro it, works like this every time.
