It might just be that your mouse needs to have the bottom taken off and the ball and rollers cleaned. They do accumulate bits of dust and oils that might be in the air, and can get really gunky. So here is something to try before you go out and buy something new:
There usually is a way to take off the sub-plate (or whatever one would call it) that holds the ball in place - so, take it off and take out the ball. Even if it doesn't look crudded-up, first wipe the ball well with alcohol, rubbing well; do that a couple of times. Then, take a Q-Tip, dip in alcohol, then press out most of the liquid (you do not want to get drips into the mouse's electronics), and carefully wipe down the rollers, rotating them so taht the entire surface is well-cleaned.
Back when I stil used a mouse, I literally had to to this every week (I';m awfully persnickety about the cursor's movements).
