Reference model question 2005-05-10 - By Matt Lind
Back The tag ID problem affects all objects as mental images does not guarantee the tags will remain the same from frame to frame when rendering with mental ray. Tag ID's are defined by the translator which passes data from your 3D application to mental ray. The tag ID's are not defined until it's time to render (or export to mi2). You can verify this by writing a mental ray shader to assign a color value to an object based on it's tag ID.
You might get lucky and have sequences of frames here and there where the ID's don't change, but over the long haul using Tag ID's in renders it not a good idea without a method to lock down the ID's.

That won't happen if we make the reference models local prior to rendering, though, will it? Or does this problem stem from nested instances?

Not only that, the tag IDs change every frame too.
