On the topic of bugs

On the topic of bugs

Hey,

I have an idea I'd like to throw out there to get people's reactions.
Or maybe this resource already exists and I just haven't found it yet.
Anyway, I've mentioned to Softimage a couple of times that it would be
really nice to have access to an updated list of bugs that have been
documented and/or fixed in XSI.   Basically, they would just publish the
readme from the QFE's somewhere in the support area.  The reason being
that it would save people a lot of trouble to be able to look at a list
of bugs before a project starts and anticipate whether or not there are
going to be issues with the current version of XSI.  Right now, the
procedure seems to be:

1) start with the released version of XSI
2) wait until a bug occurs
3) spend a week or sometimes more trying to figure out why something
isn't working
4) start a thread on this list and/or XSIBase and hope for a quick answer
4) make several calls/emails to support to nail down the bug and
reproduce it on their end
5) install a qfe or find a work-around

It seems like a more efficient procedure would be:

1) read a list of known bugs and determine if you are affected by them
2) install the qfe needed to complete the particular project
3) use steps 1-5 if another unforseen bug occurs

For one artist, this may not seem like a huge difference, but for a
large project with a renderfarm, it is.  Having to install a QFE in the
middle of a project is time-consuming and dangerous.  I realize there
are issues where Softimage doesn't want people to just blindly install
the latest QFE, and that's the danger of an approach like this.  My own
experience with QFE's has been that they invariably solve more problems
than they create, but I'm sympathetic to the support issues it causes to
have a lot of versions of the software floating around.  Still, if I'm
going to end up using the QFE anyway, it would be nice to avoid some of
the headaches and red tape.

Anyway, there are lots of trade-offs, so I'd just like to get people's
reactions.  Or maybe someone can point me to an existing resource.

Thanks,
Andy
