Back Something that no one has mentioned yet, is the log file!
Now that is an absolute lifesaver. It keeps the command history of all the work you do, and you can run it as a script. Yesterday I lost a few hours of work (well I'm on XSI 3.51 most of the time, so I'm not used to crashing! so I dont save too often) and it didnt allow to save the scene when crashing as it does most of the time. But the logfile enabled me to redo all the work I did from the last savescene in a few minutes. Thank you thank you soft for this gift from heaven.

Surely any element extrapolated from a recovered scene has the potential of containing dodgy data, no matter how 'clean' they may appear? >
