Now what do you mean by " emulate that with a rendermap"? Is there some kind of workaround? Any explanation of the workflow would be really appreciated.

I believe that the mental ray fast skin shader uses
a similar technique. The first pass of the algorithm requires a lightmap shader, so in XSI you would have to emulate that with a rendermap.
