laptops -- CompUSA No! 2005-04-13 - By brad
Back One caveat though, beware the dreaded restocking fees! If you purchase something from them or try to get service, and things don't work out, they'll charge you a hefty percentage of the cost of the item. For example, you buy a notebook from compUSA or Circuit City, and for some reason the configuration refuses to run XSI, they'll charge you $400 bucks if you need to return it.
My last experience with CompUSA (which will be my last experience with them) I brought in an older system to upgade some of the components, thinking I could be lazy and trust somebody else. Their tech got back to me a week later with the news that in order to finish the installation of new components, I would also have to buy a new power supply. After another week, the tech informed me that the new power supply wouldn't fit in my case, so I should buy a new case.
At this point, I would be spending as much on upgrading my old system as buying a new one outright, so I informed the tech that I would be canceling the upgrade. When I went to retrieve my system, the manager was there to greet me and inform me that I would be required to pay a restocking fee on all the parts I didn't purchase. He told me my choices were I could avoid the fee by going with all the upgrades or buying a new system from them. Looking over his shoulder, I noticed that my CPU was sitting on the workbench, surrounded by the upgrade items still neatly packaged in their shrinkwrapped boxes. Outraged, I decided I would pay their ransom fee and never do business with them again.
And now, I encourage the rest of you to never do business with CompUSA!!!
