Back One way to deal with this is through the use of custom parameter sets in place of variables, especially if you're thinking of global variables that you want to share across a number of expressions. This is one of the things they were designed to do. You can d&d them from the ppg into the expression editor.
On the other hand, if it's just a question of legibility in the one expression then you're probably at the point where you should be moving on to scripted ops.
