terrain generator

I spent some time using that subdivide and displace
plugin to generate terrain, and it works really well.
I used really high res grey scale images extracted
from Digital Elevation Maps.  Displacement isn't that
practicle for something like this, because I had
objects that needed to sit on the surface, and
rendering it everytime I wanted to see it, would have
driven me crazy.

However if you take some time to plan you can save
yourself a lot of geometry.  In my case I was making a
globe.  So wide areas of ocean only need to be divided
enough to wrap it on a sphere.  I usually ran it once
to layout the rough subdivisions, so I could see the
major land masses.  Then I select the polys that
really need fine detail and run it again.  Continue
that until you can get really fine deatil where you
need it, otherwise it will subdivide areas that don't
really need it.  Especially in cases where there were
small islands.  If I had done it to the whole thing,
it would be so heavy it would have been unusable.
