terrain generator 2005-04-13 - By Pingo
Back Hey Tim. Dunno if this helps, but recently I had a look at making landscapes in xsi. I used an application called world machine to generate the terain files. (It's very cheap and quite good IMHO!). Then when I wanted to use the maps in XSI I found it very annoying that the displacement in XSI doesn't show in the viewport. So I tried some different plugins. One is called Subdivide Displace and works really well.

the other one is called EM_Displacer
http://www.xsibase.com/tools/plugins.php?detail=507
that one is good one to have also.
Mindthinktools' Subdivide Displace gave me the advantage, that I could actually see what I was displacing in the viewport, and it subdivided around sharp peaks. AFTERWARDS I was then able to let XSI itself subdivide further (with SubdivideDisplace height turned to zero), but only in the areas where it was needed... kinda exponential:-/
have a look at those plugins, and world machine, and see if they can help you some.
cheers
